Stayton Cooperative Telephone Co. is awarding 15 scholarships to local high school seniors. “We started the program in 1998 and it is a way for us to support our students and the future of our community,” said Marliyn Kendall, SCTC Human Resource Administrator.

In 2006 the board telephone co-operative noticed that when they went to the scholarship awards ceremonies it was the same students receiving most of the scholarships.

“We decided to change directions and design the scholarship so that more people could participate,” said Kendall. Instead of looking at community service, grade point average, they asked students who were going to go to college to go online and participate in a co-operative education program on the Internet. Then student’s names were randomly drawn for scholarships. Since the community scholarship program has been opened up, the applications have doubled.

This year 42 seniors went through the process. The funds come from the community fund, designed to support customers. Checks are given to college-bound students to help with housing, books and tuition expenses.
