Fore!
Watch out, folks.
Golf balls will be flying during two area youth benefit golf tournaments this month.
Ram Open Golf Tournament
Regis High School is gearing up for its 25th annual Ram Open Golf Tournament on Aug. 14 at the Santiam Golf Course.
“It’s a good way to bring our alumni together,” said tournament director Gay Frank. “Each year, we consistently have a great turnout for this event. We expect this year to be just the same of better.”
Frank expects about 32 teams, or 128 golfers to turn out, but the tournament can take up to 144.
“Basically, this started as an alumni event, where they can gather, keep in touch with each other and raise money for tuition assistance here at the school,” Frank said. “But not all players are from Regis. Some are just local players who enjoy golfing in our tournament. Everyone is welcome!”
The tournament begins with a shotgun start at 8 a.m., and participants are asked to arrive a half hour early to assure a smooth launch, Frank said. Lunch and awards are provided in the $65 entry fee. The tournament includes mulligans for sale at $5 each with a maximum of two per player. Prizes include hole prizes, place payouts and random prizes from local businesses, including certificates to Figaro Pizza, Stayton Sports, the Covered Bridge Café and more.
“One of the highlights of tournament is that the community is very supportive,” Frank said. “And it’s such a fun day for everyone!”

Youth Benefit Golf Tournament
Also on Aug. 14 is the 10th annual Youth Benefit Golf Tournament, presented by the North Santiam Chamber of Commerce and the Canyon Senior Center.
“We’d like to encourage more community members to become a part of this social cause,” said Nicole Miller, NSCC executive director. “In light of budget cuts that are hitting our schools hard, it’s refreshing to know there’s another source of revenue for Canyon youth causes.”
Organizers hope to add significantly to the $72,510 raised over the past nine years at the event, which takes place at the Elkhorn Valley Golf Course in Lyons. All proceeds will benefit and finance various Santiam Canyon youth projects. Eligible for funds are: North Santiam School District, Santiam Canyon School District, St. Mary Catholic and Regis High schools.
The tournament format includes three divisions for various handicaps: men’s, mixed, and hardly ever played.
Registration fees are $360 per four-person team, if paid by Aug. 5; $400 Aug. 6 and after. Cost includes green fees, power golf cart, continental breakfast, buffet lunch and tee prize.
Freres Lumber Company of Lyons is the title sponsor, with Santiam Memorial Hospital as the super-platinum sponsor, and Santiam Hematology as the platinum sponsor. Additional sponsorship opportunities are available and donations of golf balls, golf towels and tees are needed.
