Building leaders: Free program offered

The Ford Institute for Community Building and Rural Development Initiatives invites area residents to participate in the upcoming Stayton/Sublimity community leadership class. Sponsored by The Ford Family Foundation, the free class is based on the belief that thriving rural communities develop from a broad base of skilled and motivated leaders, a diversity of effective organizations, and a collaborative network.

The Ford Institute Leadership Program, delivered by Rural Development Initiatives:

• Focuses on developing the community leadership capacity of individuals;

• Is completely free and includes tuition, meals, and materials;

• Asks only that participants contribute their time and commitment to complete the class project.

It is held once per month over four months beginning in September: Friday 1 to 8 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

The deadline to apply for the Stayton/Sublimity class is June 15. A typical class consists of about 25-35 individuals ranging from high school students to retired seniors with leadership experience levels ranging from emerging to seasoned. Any area residents who wish to gain new tools for making positive change in the local community is encouraged to apply.

“I think this has given such a shot in the arm to not only the people who were involved in the leadership institute, but it’s going to be a big shot in the arm for this whole community,” said Kelly Schreiber, Stayton Sublimity Chamber of Commerce executive director and a recent participant.
