Stampede: Thrills, spills ‘n’ rodeo chills

Rodeo fans, it’s time to grab your cowboy hat and tug on your cowboy boots for the Santiam Canyon Stampede, a NPRA-sanctioned rodeo, in Sublimity.

The annual Stampede Kick-Off Party is 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 21 at the Sublimity Harvest Festival Grounds, 118800 Sublimity Road SE.

Food, a silent auction and live music will highlight the night’s activities. Tickets are $10 in advance and include food, or $5 at the door without dinner.

Something else new this year is Patriot Night, honoring local military and veterans.

“We are looking for help from the community,”  spokesperson Corky Justis said. “We would like a picture with the person’s full name, hometown and rank. These will be displayed publicly.” Send photos to: stampede@wvi.com.

Kids can enter the annual Coloring Contest by picking up sheets at the North Santiam Community Credit Union. All submitted colored sheets will receive an A&W Kid’s Meal. Top prize is $100 in each category.

“We’re also bringing back our Tough Enough to Wear Pink night again and we will be donating to the Santiam Memorial Hospital,” Justis said.

Gates open at 5:30 p.m. Friday with NPRA Rodeo action beginning at 7 p.m. Mutton Busting, JR Bull Riding and Extreme Motorcycle with Justin Homan, X-Games gold medalist, are on the agenda. At 9 p.m., dance to the Never-2-Late band in the tent.

Both Saturday and Sunday, firefighters will serve a Cowboy Breakfast from 7 a.m. to noon at the Sublimity Fire Hall.

On the menu are pancakes, ham, eggs, orange juice, milk and coffee in the apparatus bays at the main fire station, 115 NW Parker St. Cost is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors 55-plus and children 4-12, free for children 4 and younger.

Saturday the gate opens at 5:30 p.m. with NPRA Rodeo action at 7 p.m., including a repeat performance of Friday’s offerings. Dance in the tent to Never-2-Late following the rodeo.

Tickets range from $6 to $12 and are available at Wilco Farm stores, Double H Western Wear, and at the gate.

“We also have e-tickets this year that can be purchased from our website, www.scsrodeo.com, or our Facebook page,” Justis said.
