Lyons receives tree donation

By Mary OwenStaked saplings are going in Freres Park and around Lyons as part of a recent donation to the city.

Several areas in Lyons received a new look for the new year with a recent donation by a local business owner of 400 trees and shrubs.

Bev Reding of Fawn Meadow Farm/Gardens Year-Round, a tree nursery in Lyons, donated several varieties that initiated a number of significant tree and shrub planting projects. She planned out many of the sites to receive attention, said Audrey McNerney, assistant city manager.

“The city is so appreciative of all the work she has put in, not only the donation but getting the trees ready to put in the ground,” McNerney said.

According to a city reports, trees along the south border of Fox Valley Cemetery have already been removed and will be replaced with a combination of arbor vitas and trees. The larger established trees that border the west side of the cemetery remain, and the area will be replanted with new trees from the south to the north boundary.

Also receiving new trees are the pond area and walking trails at Freres Park.

Small groves of trees will be planted in the area to the west of the Corner Market and on the large grassy areas along each side of Juniper and Fifth streets, the city reported.

“The area on Locust Street alongside the bridge as you enter Lyons will also be planted with various smaller shrubs,” City Manager Mary Mitchell said, adding the planting project should be completed before the end of the year.

“The city owes a debt of gratitude to Mrs. Reding for her generous donation, which will add greatly to the beauty of our historic cemetery, park and many areas of our lovely city,” Mitchell said. “Thank you, Mrs. Reding.”
