Art, poetry exhibit reception set for Jan. 9

Ten Stayton-area artists invite the community to see their paintings and mixed-media works they have created in response to poems by Oregon poets.

The work is on display the month of January at Paul Toews’ studio, 349 N. Third Ave., Stayton. A reception at the studio is 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 9.

The broadsides of poems by the late William Stafford, former Oregon Poet Laureate and longtime teacher at Lewis and Clark College will also be on display.

The exhibit will include additional pieces done by some of the artists in response to poems by Stafford.
At the Jan. 9 reception, several current Oregon poets will read a poem of their own and a poem by Stafford.

The Stayton-area artists with works in the exhibit are Marla Brummer, Vi Cotter, Jane Hansen, Robin Christy Humelbaugh, Millie Klecker, John Larimer, Joan Nemchick, Pam Pugsley, Penny Snyder and Paul Toews.

Poets reading their works include the current Oregon Poet Laureate Paulann Petersen, Tim Applegate, Judith Barrington, Eleanor Berry, Margaret Chula, Nita Countryman, Charles Goodrich, Kate Gray, Marianne Klekacz, Gary Lark, Thomas Madden, Judith H. Montgomery, Carolyn Moore, Jean Richardson, Penelope Scambly Schott, Floyd Skloot and Ellen Waterston.

This exhibit of art responding to poetry and the William Stafford poetry broadsides is one of a series of varied poetry events being coordinated by Eleanor Berry under the name North Santiam Poetry Works.

During the previous eight years, Berry coordinated the Second Sundays Series of Poetry Readings, a monthly series that ended this past June.
