Golf tournament: Elkhorn event benefits local scholarships

Golfers – here’s the excuse you need to spend a day on the golf course instead of working in the yard. After all, who can say no to golfing if it is for a great cause.

Golfers are invited to play in the ninth annual Youth Benefit Golf Tournament (YBGT) on Sunday, Aug. 8. The Santiam Canyon’s charity golf event is held at Elkhorn Valley Golf Course in Lyons.

Proceeds from the tournament benefit and finance various Santiam Canyon youth projects. The goals of the tournament are to generate funds needed to help with activities and events involving youth living in the Santiam Canyon, demonstrate to youth that we believe in them and solicit the support of sponsors to make this tournament a continued success.

The Youth Benefit Golf Tournament’s format consists of three divisions for various handicaps: Men’s, Mixed and Hardly Ever Played. Registration fees are $340 per four-person team if paid by Aug. 1, or $380 per team if paid after the deadline. Tournament registration includes green fees, golf cart, continental breakfast, lunch and tee prize.

The North Santiam Chamber of Commerce and the Canyon Senior Center are working together to present the YBGT. For the eighth year in a row, the title sponsor is Freres Lumber Company of Lyons. The super platinum sponsor is Santiam Memorial Hospital and Salem Hematology has signed up as a platinum sponsor. Additional sponsorship opportunities are available, with companies being recognized and listed on the YBGT Web site at www.ybgolf.com.

Over the years, the tournament has provided more than $60,510 worth of funding for youth-related projects in the Santiam Canyon area. Donations are still needed for this year’s event including golf balls, golf towels and tees. High-value prizes are also needed to be awarded to winners.

Team Etzel: On the road to conquer Multiple Sclerosis

When Ron Etzel was diagnosed with cancer several years ago, he didn’t let it keep him down. In late 2004, just 10 months after two major surgeries, Etzel rode his first century ride – 100 miles in one day. It’s a feat the 57-year-old Sublimity resident repeats every year while riding his bike to raise funds to battle multiple sclerosis through BIKE MS, a series of charity bicycle rides organized by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in various locations around the United States.
