“May I take your order please?”

Whether in pajamas, trailing toddlers, or on a quick lunch break from work, sandwiches are now just a drive-through away.

“We want to cater to every person, walk-in or sitting in the car,” said Chip Chipman, who owns Stayton Subway with his son, Jeff. “Young mothers can come through the drive-through without unloading the kids and the whole nine yards. People with handicaps and seniors don’t have to get out of their car. We want to make it easy for our customers.”

Chipman expected customers to be lined up to be the first to use the drive-thru window or enter the new store on its soft opening day. As of Jan. 28, the Stayton eatery joined the wave of restaurants that have added drive-up services to their facilities, and it also sports a new location and updated look.

“I guess you can call us the Taj Mahal of Stayton,” Chipman said of the new stand-alone facility just yards away from its former location in the Roth’s / Bi-Mart center on Shaff Road.

“There are only two Subway stores in the state of Oregon with this décor.”

Wallpaper, material lampshades, cocktail tables, comfortably upholstered booths, and tasteful use of wood, paint and art work turn the sandwich eatery into a

trendy place to enjoy sandwiches made to order with all the trimmings, Chipman said.

New ovens will provide customers with fresh bread baked every four hours, and two heat pumps will keep the inside of the restaurant cool in the summer, Chipman added.

“We love the city of Stayton,” Chipman said. “We want everything to be perfect for our customers.”

Chipman keeps his store running smoothly with the help of his manager, Janelle Nunez. His son, Jeff, at age 27, is the youngest Subway franchise owner in the state.

Chipman and his wife, Bernie, owned a movie-rental business before opening Stayton Subway.

“We met a lot of nice people in Stayton,” Chipman said. “That’s why we decided to start the Subway business here.”

Today, the Chipmans own six Subways, including two in Salem and three in Keizer.

“It is the fastest growing franchise in the world,” Chipman said. “I’ve owned others, but this is the most competitive and aggressive.”

A grand opening for the new Subway eatery will be held in March, “once all the kinks are worked out,” Chipman said.

“So watch for the ads for the big promotion,” Chipman said. “We serve fresh, healthy food daily. Come and check us out.”

Chipman thanks his Stayton customers for their last 20 years of support.

“We are looking forward to the next era,” he said.
