Fall fashion: Hospital auxiliary takes to the runway for an entertainin evening

By Mary Owen

Models will grace the runway with fashions from Chico’s of Salem at the Santiam Hospital Auxiliary’s upcoming fashion show.

“This is our second fashion show,” said Margie Forrest, spokesperson for the auxiliary. “Last year’s was held at the Knights of Columbus Hall and was filled to capacity. This is a new venue for us, and hopefully will solve some of the problems we had with people being able to see and hear about all the models.”

The fashion show, coordinated by Mary Lou Hazelwood, is slated for Thursday, Oct. 29, 6 p.m. at the Stayton Community Center. Tickets are $20 per person, which includes a ticket for free glass of wine and a ticket for the gift-basket drawing.

“There are 160 tickets available, and we hope to sell them all,” Forrest said. “There will also be door prizes.”

Tickets may be purchased from auxiliary members, at the Santiam Hospital reception desk, Prudential Real Estate Professionals in Stayton, online at 222.staytonevents.com, or by calling Lucile Kelley, 503-769-5934.

Models will be Lisa Eckis, Wendy Edwards, Brenda Bonebrake, Mary Gries, Sandy Edwards, Patty Hill, Cindy Myhrvold, Lauren Benjamin, Shirl Shetler, Pat Spaeth, Traci Jenkins, Jennifer Minten, Reanna Duchene, Maggie Hudson, Anna Benefiel and Judy Dixon. Most work in the local business community.

Debbie Groves, SH’s dietary department supervisor, will oversee the cooking staff who will be serving appetizers and punch.

“They were so wonderful last year,” Forrest said.

Entertainment will be provided by Sound Waves, directed by Sally Bone of Salem.

Funds raised will go toward the auxiliary’s scholarship program.

“This year we gave 14 scholarships for a total of $10,000,” Forrest said. “And the various departments of the hospital gave us a wish list for the year, and depending on the funds available, we try to fulfill as many as we can.

“In the past, we helped purchase an ambulance, some important medical equipment for the hospital, and recently helped to pay for the remodeling of the cafeteria,” she added. “We also support the Junior Volunteer Program and buy some of their supplies.”

The auxiliary holds five major fundraisers each year, including a See’s Candy Sale in February, an Easter Tulip Sale, a Harvest Breakfast at the Sublimity Fire Hall and the Fashion Show in September, and a Poinsettia Sale each December.

“We also receive donations for all our causes from the hospital staff, doctors and the community throughout the year,” Forrest said. “Also, the auxiliary has the gift shop in the hospital lobby.”

In addition to raising funds, the events raise awareness for the auxiliary.

“They let the public know we are an active group and need new members and suggestions for future fundraisers or activities, and to promote the local hospital,” Forrest said.

Dues are $10 per year or $100 for a lifetime membership. Regular meetings are held at 1 p.m. on the third Thursday of the month in January, April, July and October in the hospital conference room.

“We do hold a few special meetings when the need arises for the fundraisers,” Forrest said.
