US Bank closing Mill City branch in January

US Bank has announced it will close its branch in Mill City in January among multiple closures nationwide as the company reacts to an increase in customers banking digitally rather than in-person.

On Tuesday, local bank clients received notices that the branch at 400 NW Santiam Blvd., in Mill City, would permanently close on Jan. 12, 2026.

The notice said, “Clients’ banking preferences and behaviors are changing, influencing how and where we operate,” and that the local branch would be consolidated with others.

The branch is currently the only banking institution in Mill City. The next closest is the US Bank in Stayton.

Local clients will still be able to use the ATM at the local 7-Eleven without fees or surcharges from US Bank, according to the company’s website.

The Mill City branch first opened in 1988 and has become more than just a place to deposit checks. The branch helped facilitate local community programs such as food drives and the Save Our Bridge fundraiser, and became home to more than one iconic “bank cat.”

Mill City Mayor Tim Kirsch told The Canyon Weekly US Bank has been “an anchor in the community for a long, long time.”

“It’s a shame that it’s happening,” he said of the closure.

Kirsch said he understands US Bank as a company needs to look out for its own interests and that it’s difficult for a small town to fully support a bank.

“I can understand the reasoning behind it but I don’t relish it happening,” he said.

Kirsch said the City of Mill City is a US Bank customer and officials will need to have a discussion about whether or not to travel to another branch or look for a banking alternative. The first opportunity for such a discussion was the City Council meeting scheduled for Tuesday night.

US Bank also announced 10 other branches would be closing in January across six other states. This is on top of 40 branches US Bank has closed or will close by the end of the year nationwide.

Closures elsewhere in Oregon include a branch in North Bend and a branch in Portland.
