Large business – Generations of commitment at Modern Building Systems

The Stayton Sublimity Chamber of Commerce 2019 Large Business award goes to Modern Building Systems in Aumsville.

The award goes to a chamber member business or organization for excellence in products or services, customer service, and contributions to the communities’ economy and vitality.

Modern was nominated for being an innovative leader, for recently converting its Oregon plant to solar energy, for its focus on honesty, safety, sustainability and quality, and for impacting local communities through providing jobs and securing the project for the new build of the Santiam Junior/Senior High School in Mill City, among other projects.

“I represent the third generation of family ownership here at Modern,” said Alan Rasmussen, vice president of production, who oversees all functions after his sales department sells a building project.

“This includes our in-house design and engineering, purchasing, manufacturing, trucking, and site crew departments,” he added. “This keeps me quite busy, and there is always a new opportunity every day.”

MBS actively supports and is involved in CTE programs at local school districts as well as helping in local Habitat for Humanity projects, Rasmussen said.

“And we have invested hundreds of thousands in green energy programs to offset our environmental impact to the community,” he said. “With lighting, solar panels, and aggressive recycling programs.

“We are proud to be on the team to build the new Santiam Canyon School District Junior/Senior High School,” he added. “We are looking at potential new product offerings and exploring expanding our solar panel array on our factory building.”

Nick Harville, SEDCOR Business Retention and Expansion Manager, Marion County, commended MBS for the award.

“For almost 50 years Modern Building Systems has been dedicated to providing high quality modular buildings to their clients all around the United States,” Harville said. “Along with that dedication to their clients is an even deeper dedication to their employees and their communities.”

Annually, Harville said Modern puts in excess of $15 million into the regional economy, buying services and materials.

He also commended the company for helping create “the new workforce working with students from a variety of schools and support of vocational training.”

“This award is well deserved to generations of the Rasmussen family,” Harville said.

Rasmussen said he was humbled by the recognition. As a family-owned company, he said he views his employees as such. When at Little League games, at the park or in stores and at other places around town, he loves running across “our teammates here at Modern.”

“There are many great people and companies in this region doing great things and to be viewed in high regard is truly an honor,” Rasmussen said. “My family cares very much for our employees, clients and this community, so it’s nice to see others recognize our efforts.”
