Council seat: Candidates invited

Mayor Hank Porter has invited potential candidates to attend the Stayton City Council meeting tin October.

“We want to let them see us in action,” Porter said. “Maybe somebody will get cold feet when they see how we operate.”

Porter received about a half dozen letters of interest to take over former Councilor Brian Quigley’s seat, vacated by his recent resignation. Quigley was honored by the city on Sept. 19 for his 8.5 years of service to the Stayton community. Prior to his time on the city council, he served on the planning commission, parks and recreation board of directors, and the city’s Charter Review Committee.

Porter called the selection process “slow,” adding that applications have been received from “some really competent people.”

“This won’t be easy,” he added about selecting the right person to take on Quigley’s council duties.

Porter said he will select a person to fill the vacant council seat within the next two weeks. The councilor term runs through December 2020. City Council meetings typically occur at 7 p.m. on the first and third Monday of every month.
