So much to do: Fireworks. fun and fundraisers in July

Detroit Lake

Detroit Lake’s fireworks show takes place at dusk on Friday, July 3, west of Kane’s Marina. Detroit Lake Recreation Area Business Association sponsors the event, and camping is available via the state parks system and other outlets.

The Forest Service offers the day use park as a viewing area for about 1,000 people, said Pat McCarty. Jim McWhirter added, “Campgrounds are usually full, so make reservations early. ”

DLRABA member Dave Shelton, who watches the display every year, said, “The light reflects beautifully over the water, and the best viewing is from the lake in a boat.” Several hundred boats are launched each year for the event. “The fireworks are spectacularly brighter than most displays because of the lack of competition from light pollution. We’re in the national forest here, and it gets really dark,” Shelton said.

Fireworks normally start about 10 p.m. For details, visit http://detroitlakeoregon.org.

Relay for Life

Organizers hope to raise $97,000 at Stayton’s annual Relay for Life, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.

“We have almost 400 participants registered and we are hoping for 200 (cancer) survivors,” said Alisha Oliver, co-chair of the publicity committee with Tracy Jones. This year’s theme is “Hope Floats,” and a relay at 6 p.m. Friday, July 10, at the Regis High School track will open the two-day event.

A Luminaria Ceremony of Hope, honoring and/or in memory of those who have fought cancer, will begin about 10 p.m. Lighted candles, posted around the track, may be purchased at the Relay for a $5 donation or prior to the relay at Postal Connections or by calling Bonnie Marshall at 503-769-6510.

There will be a silent auction Friday night, ending at 11 p.m., and on Saturday breakfast will be available for a suggested $3 donation.

“The relay will conclude Saturday at noon, with a closing ceremony that begins around 11 a.m.,” Oliver said.

Also fundraising are:
• Break the Chain Apparel, an online clothing outlet dedicated to breaking the chain of domestic abuse and violence, www.breakthechainapparel.com or 503-931-2766.
• Postal Connections drawing for of a Coby 7-inch portable DVD player. Tickets are $2 at 1740 Shaff Road. Winning ticket will be pulled at 11 a.m. Saturday at the event.
