Scholarships: $6,000 awarded

Santiam Memorial Hospital Auxiliary has selected recipients for its 2009 scholarship awards. This year, the auxiliary is awarding $6,000 in scholarships.

Receiving $1,000 awards are: Laura Ann Paquet to Pacific University Physical Therapy Graduate Program; Cory Jacob Tiller of Scio High School to Dominican University of California, pre-dental; Rayanna Hepfner-Mitchell of Chemeketa Community College’s nursing program; Wyatt O. Briggs of Scio High School to Willamette University to major in PreSports Medicine/Physical Therapy and Kelli Behrens of Lane Community College for respiratory therapy.

The following applicants will receive $500 awards: Michael Albin Etzel of Oregon State University to major in dietetics and Courtney Schmidig of Eastern Oregon University for its LaGrande Campus, Nursing program.

To qualify for scholarships, the students must be a high school senior or currently enrolled in a medical program and have been accepted by an accredited school into a program in the medical field.

Each year, notices are sent to all North Santiam area high schools with applications and instructions as to qualifications. Students enrolled in college in the medical field are also eligible for the scholarships.

Applicants were given personal interviews by a member of the auxiliary and two employees of the hospital. The monies awarded are paid directly to the school to which they have been accepted.

The next meeting of the Santiam Memorial Hospital Auxiliary will be 1 p.m. on July 16. New members are always welcomed.
