Free park concerts

A series of free summer evening concerts in Stayton Community Park begins July 24 and runs on Thursday evenings through August, with varied programs of easy-to-listen-to music. You’re invited to bring your lawn chair and sit back and relax.

The concerts take place from 6 to 8 p.m. behind the Stayton Public Library off First Avenue. The events will be Thursdays, July 24, 31 and Aug. 14 and 21, sponsored in part by the Stayton Parks and Recreation Department and KENC Community Radio.

The first event, July 24, features Joni Harms, America’s reigning Queen of American Western music, a Sony recording artist and a Oregon native and resident. This concert is sponsored in part by Holmes II Construction Company of Stayton.

On July 31, Jake Jolliff and Wes Corbett are featured. Jolliff is a mandolin major attending Berkley School of Music in Boston and is a young, major player in the world of mandolin playing. His partner, Corbett, is well known for his banjo playing. Their program is jazz, swing, blues and bluegrass. The concert is sponsored in part by Cartwright’s Music and Repair Shop.

The August 14 concert features local jazz band and contemporary music group Cool Conspiracy, a five-piece swing, jazz and contemporary band with Patty Feltman on lead vocals.

The final concert, on Aug. 21, is JR and the Farm – an upbeat country rock band featuring Jessie Ruggles. They call their music “Crunchy Western.” This event is sponsored in part by Monte’s
Coins and More.
