A strong finish: Cascade boys track takes third in State Class 4A

The Cascade High track and field team took advantage of its top-flight sprinting corps to take home third place in the boys team race May 24-25 at the OSAA Class 4A state championships at Hayward Field in Eugene.

The Cougars scored 55 points, one behind runner-up North Valley and five behind champion Siuslaw.

“We had a very good state meet,” said Cascade coach Dan Petersen. “Our kids are competitors and love the big meets. We had several season best performances when it mattered most.”

Morris Back (11.28) and Nathan Martin (11.34) went 2-3 in the 100, Martin also took third in the 200 (22.55) and fourth in the 100 hurdles in a personal best 14.77. Back ran the anchor leg on Cascade’s 4×100 relay team, which took fourth in 43.59.

Patrick Bladorn took second in the high jump (personal best 6-5) and fifth in the pole vault (13-0). John Schifferer ran a personal best 39.60 to take third in the 300 hurdles and James Vettrus was fifth in the 400 in a seasonal best 51.24. Kiel Phelps was sixth in the discus (144-8).

Cougars wheelchair competitor Caleb Mitchell took second in the 100 (24.78) and 200 (51.83).

Erika Lund (eighth in the discus, 109-2) was the lone placer for the Cascade girls team.

Scio, meanwhile, finished second in Class 3A, led by Brady Smith, who won the 100 (11.19), the 200 (22.39) and participated on the Loggers’ winning 4×100 (43.43) and 4×400 (3:27.06) relay squads. Also participating in the 4×100 were Nathan Jones, Austin Angerbauer and A.J. Holmberg. Nathan Jones, Ben Jones and Holmberg teamed up with Smith in the 4×400.

Nathan Jones also took third in 400 (51.43), Angerbauer was sixth in the 200 (23.61) and Holmberg was sixth in the 800 (2:03.54). Daniel Harper was second in the 100 hurdles in 15.57.

The Scio girls scored 11 points, led by Natalie Legras, who was fifth in the 100 (13.30) and sixth in the 200 (27.40).

The Regis girls took ninth in Class 2A with 29.5 points, led by Kimberly Webb and Monica Webb. Kimberly took second in the discus (99-2), while Monica was third in the long jump (15-3/4) and tied for fourth in the high jump (4-10).

Erica Stuckart was seventh in the 300 hurdles (51.07) and ran a leg on the 4×100 relay team that finished fifth in 52.97. Also running on the relay were Madison Boyd, Ashtyn Chamberland and Camille Dickey. In addition K.C. Christiansen was fifth in the triple jump (32-1 1/2 and Liz Ayers was eighth in the shot put (29-6 3/4) for the Rams.

Ryan Mumey (seventh in the pole vault at 11-0) was the lone placer for the Regis boys.

Curtis Deetz of Stayton took second in the Class 4A triple jump (44-3 ½) and Jackie Chandler (fourth in the 800 at 2:18.80) and Anna Smith (seven in pole vault at 9-0) scored points for the Stayton girls.

In Class 4A boys golf Mike Windsor of Stayton finished tied for 26th at 179 and Cascade’s Jake Dalke tied for 33rd at 184. The tournament was played May 13-14 at Emerald Valley in Creswell. Brook Hite of Stayton was 38th at 205 in the 4A girls tournament May 13-14 at Eagle Crest in Redmond.

In Class 4A boys tennis the Cascade doubles team of Truman Clark and Jordan Farr advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to eventual runners-up Evan Hallmark and Ian McClanan of Catlin Gabel, 6-1, 7-5. In the 4A girls singles draw, Angele Coutant of Cascade lost her opening match but won twice in consolation before falling in the consolation finals to Paige Hahn of Henley, 6-2, 6-4.

The Regis softball team, which finished tied for third in Special District 3, made a nice run in the Class 2A-1A playoffs, beating Kennedy 5-4 in the district playoffs and Bonanza 15-0 in the state playoffs before being ousted 5-3 by Glendale on May 24 in the quarterfinals. The Rams finished 11-13 overall.

The Regis baseball team also advanced to the 2A-1A quarterfinals before falling to Special District 2 rival Country Christian, 10-5.  The Rams, Country Christian and Kennedy tied for the district title with 13-3 records, but the Rams claimed the playoff title with a 14-0 win against Kennedy. Regis won its first-round playoff game, 5-1 against Oakland, before losing to Country Christian to finish 19-10.

The Stayton softball team finished 9-6 in Oregon West play and won a Class 4A play-in game, 8-3 against Junction City before falling 4-0 to McLoughlin in the first round of the playoffs.
